I am so excited about
something a friend of mine just shared that I can’t hold it in.
When I started Miracle Noodle, I made a pledge that a portion of
the profits would always go to the Juvenile Diabetes Research
Foundation.

I believe that just the intention of giving this money in the
cosmic scheme of things has helped my business. Do you know what I
mean?

Today’s brief newsletter is going to be about the major pitfalls I
see in people when they work out.
Let me see if this sounds familiar to you?
1. You get really excited about exercising and then jump into it with
fervor and then as time goes by you lose the enthusiasm.
or
2. You just can’t seem to get the enthusiasm to get started or to
continue with some regularity.
The great thing in this newsletter is that I am going to solve the
problem for both of these situations with the same solution.
So what is the answer?

This part is going to discuss how to assess the carbs, fat, and
protein in a product and how they are reflected in the label and
how you should be looking at these to make the right choices for
your diet.
First with some basic science out of the way. If you take 1 gram
of fat and 1 gram of carbs and 1 gram of protein, we need to
understand the difference in the calories for each of these sizes.
In other words if you take the same weight of each of the above
things ie. fat, protein, carbs, you have to realize that the fat is
going to have twice the amount of the calories for the same amount
than protein or carbs.

Did you know that when you read a food label the list of ingredients are listed in order of amount?
That’s right, first ingredient has the highest quantity in the product followed in descending order by what follows.
The same principle holds in other products like sunscreen as well. So if you are looking for a broad spectrum sun block with zinc oxide for example make sure it is near the top and not the bottom.
The first step in reading labels is to look at the ingredient list. It is amazing especially with juices that some grape juices on the market have apple juice and sugar before they have grape!!
It is also essential if you are trying to limit your intake of corn syrups and high glycemic foods. If you are not familiar with what high glycemic means here is a link.

I have received several emails over the last month about how to increase your metabolism. By increasing your metabolism you burn more energy and hence burn more fat. So lets get right to it.
1. The best way to increase metabolism is by increasing muscle mass. Even a slight
increase ramps up your resting metabolic rate and burns calories.
Your exercise program must have a weight bearing component to it to work well. More in
later newsletters
2. Don’t go through starve and feed cycles. Some experts have recommended eating small frequent
meals but studies have not proven this out as the problem becomes people don’t end up eating small Continue Reading »

There has been a lot of press about recent studies on Vitamin D. The importance of these studies lie in the fact that recent discoveries have shown that most cells in the body have Vitamin D receptors.
It is these receptors beyond its function in the metabolism of Calcium and Phosphorus that can play a role in decreasing the risk of common cancers, autoimmune diseases, infectious diseases, and others.
So how do I get Vitamin D?
Well, there are generally considered 3 sources.
1. Sunlight particularly UVB hits the skin and causes a metabolic reaction that creates Vitamin D Continue Reading »

Jack LaLanne is one of my role models. Here is a guy who turns 93 next week and still works out 2 hours per day. He is an amazing man for his motivational skills alone. Doctors told him when he was young that lifting weights would be detrimental to his health! When he made the suggestion that women should also lift weights they thought
he was out of his mind!
The studies come rolling in to prove what he has known for years, an exercise program in order to be complete must have both resistance training like weight lifting and a cardiovascular component. The latest study is entitled ““Effects of Aerobic Training, Resistance Training, or Both on Glycemic Control in Type 2 Diabetes: A Randomized Trial” Continue Reading »

We are creatures of habit. There is a great saying by Israel Salanter that says “The loudest sound in the universe is the breaking of a habit.” In today’s world there are so
many diversions that we become habituated to our diversions. I have friends who carry and check their blackberry’s every couple of minutes!
The issue is that we forget that we are part of nature and need to be a part of nature from time to time. You need to make sure that the habits of modern life have not prevented you from getting out into nature. I live in Southern California which many of you know Continue Reading »

Late last night I caught a rerun of an Oprah Episode. As many of you know, I am one of
the few men who are not ashamed to say that I love Oprah:) She really is something, isn’t she?:)
She had her fitness guru on and there was a woman, who had a Ph.D in nutrition but was having a hard time losing weight. How could this be? the question was asked. A very intense and amazing discussion followed about the role of self-image and weight loss.
If you cannot envision yourself as what you want to be or to change to, nothing you do, not affirmations, not positive thinking will help.
So what is a person to do? Continue Reading »

Well, it has been around 8 weeks now since I have had my Aerogarden and I wanted to let you know what I think of it.
Firstly, it was ridiculously easy to set up. It really is just put the seed pods in, put the bulbs in, add water. Reminds me of that infomercial on late night tv with the rotisserie chickens “Set it and forget it!”:) I know you know the one I am talking about:)
Growth started around 4 days after turning the Aerogarden on. There is a certain pleasure watching something grow.
Water refills are hardly needed in the beginning but as the plants get bigger, you really need to check it frequently. Continue Reading »
